ARMSTRONG will be launching new technology for integration of renewables (including heat pump, solar and biomass) with more traditional HVAC equipment such as radiators and condensing boilers. Armstrong’s Integrated Solar Solution - a pre-engineered solar heating system designed to produce domestic hot water at 60ºC with gas fired condensing boiler back-up. It is suitable for DHWS loads up to 1600 litres per day – will be featured. A biodegradable propylene glycol solution is circulated through the solar array by the solar pump station once a predetermined temperature differential is established. The solar array heats the water/glycol mixture, which in turn heats the lower portion of the stainless steel solar cylinder. When there is insufficient solar energy available to achieve 60ºC, the LZC controller automatically brings in the back-up boiler for instant top up. The LZC controller ensures that maximum solar energy is utilised whilst at the same time ensuring that the back-up boiler operates in condensing mode.

One of the challenges to integration of renewables is that the various low and zero carbon technologies operate at their most efficient at different temperatures. These differences in operating temperatures, in many early projects incorporating renewables, led to less than efficient operation of the system overall. Armstrong’s answer is to integrate the renewable devices with a thermal store, combined with an LZC controller and with HVAC equipment from its range that is specifically designed for all variable speed operation. The end result is that the carbon impact for the system as a whole is minimised. Carbon reduction benefits for the site that arise from the use of on-site generation are not sacrificed by inefficient operation of other system components. Each element of the system is designed, and automatically controlled, to operate at its most efficient.

This featured exhibit is of use to public sector buildings such as schools, universities, local and national government buildings, hospitals etc, as well as the full range of commercial buildings such as office blocks and retail sites. Recent Armstrong projects involving renewable energy sources include biomass-based energy centres for Academy 360 and Red House Academy – two new schools in Sunderland built under the government’s BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme.

At Armstrong’s stand visitors to the show can look in closer detail at one of the key components of zero and low carbon systems – a booster set incorporating Armstrong IVS pumps – capable of increasing efficiency by over 40% compared to traditional fixed speed pumps. The Armstrong IVS is a variable speed drive pump incorporating an integrated inverter which automatically calculates the building demand and adjusts the speed of the drive accordingly. Embedded within the memory of the speed controller are pump performance curves for differing speeds, including power, pressure and flow data across the flow range of the pump. So, as long as the inverter can identify the power and speed of the pump, it can carry out the necessary calculations to determine the hydraulic performance and position in the pump’s head-flow characteristics. The speed controller then regulates the pump accordingly to ensure that only the required energy for its current base-load is used.

This means the pump is self-contained, capable of operating without a centralised inverter, and without the need for differential pressure sensors within the system. It can be easily linked to a BMS for greater visibility of what is happening, but it does not rely on electronic communication with other elements of the system in order to understand the job it needs to do. It arrives on site with all this intelligence already resident (so it doesn’t require complicated commissioning) and is “plug and play” requiring no programming by the user. This exhibit is of use for public sector buildings such as schools, universities, local and national government buildings, hospitals etc, as well as the full range of commercial buildings such as office blocks and retail sites.

In response to strong customer demand, Armstrong has just announced that it has extended its award-winning IVS range of integrated Sensorless control pumps (previously available up to 7.5kW) to include models with variable speed drives up to 55kW. The pumps are Armstrong’s Series 4300 and 4302 models – now a HVAC industry standard – incorporating integrated inverters which automatically calculate the building demand and adjust the speed of the drives accordingly. The extension of the range means that an even wider range of applications can now benefit from the advantages of the IVS pump range, which include, among others: energy efficient variable speed pumping achieved more quickly and easily at lower cost; reduced complexity of system design without the need for remote VFDs and sensors; faster maintenance (even on the largest pump models) with a 50% reduction in seal costs; energy consumption reduced by over 20% compared to maintaining a constant pressure across the pump.

In addition to providing a far more effective alternative to traditional variable speed pumping in new builds, the built-in control of the IVS range has valuable benefits for retrofits, simplifying the migration from fixed to variable speed. IVS Sensorless pumps up to 7.5kW have become a top-selling product line for Armstrong. The latest launch extends the opportunity for integrated Sensorless control for variable speed vertical in-line pumps up to 55kW, meaning that specifiers can offer significantly better energy efficiency performance without the fear of adding to the complexity and cost of the system. Energy savings of greater than 50% can be achieved as Sensorless technology allows easier energy optimisation. Installed cost is typically 25% lower than for a conventional vertical in-line pump with separate VFD and remote sensor.

Project risk is reduced as concerns regarding incorrect sensor placement and/or sensor failure are eliminated. Integration of control reduces the footprint of the equipment, providing significant space savings. Seal maintenance costs are reduced by over 50% due to split-coupled pump design. The external mechanical seal can be replaced without the need to remove the motor, VSD and rotating assembly. To coincide with the launch of the extended IVS range, Armstrong is also launching a range of standalone inverters, the IVS102, to offer specifiers variable speed pumping up to 450kW maximum power. www.armstrongintegrated.com

Hydro Group exhibitThe HYDRO GROUP will be highlighting the Hydro Renewable Connector (HRC), the result of extensive research and development has been designed to meet the specific needs of the marine renewable market and is one of a range of innovative products Hydro Group has developed in more than three decades serving the subsea market.

The HRC connects wave or tidal power generation units in a system suitable for field termination to both static heavily-armoured seabed cables and dynamic flexible umbilicals, and is deck mateable in a day! The current design is rated at 12 kV and future product development will increase the operating voltage to 33 kV.

Hydro Group has already been awarded a contract worth £500,000 in a project that will see the global solution provider of optical and electrical subsea products collaborating on the Wave Hub project.

Wave Hub is a marine renewable infrastructure project being developed by the South West RDA (Regional Development Agency). It is situated on the seabed in some 50 metres of sea water approximately 16 km off the coast of Cornwall and connected to the National Grid via a subsea cable.

The Hydro Renewable Connector (HRC), has been designed to meet the specific needs of the marine renewable market. The success of the product was determined by the limited time available for the launch of major marine renewable projects that are due to be installed in the summer of 2010. Reducing installation time, which in turn reduces considerable cost, by cutting time allocated to vessels and personnel was a priority. And, of course, the reduction and elimination of offshore installation risks was vital.

The ability to monitor the condition of the cable and connector with loop back from the shore end prior to installation of the wave energy convertors was crucial and increasing current connector availability from 6 kV to 12 kV is important because this allows marine renewable energy companies to work with higher voltages. The reduction of partial discharge in the connector design is a major achievement and  third party certification and approval of design by DNV was essential.

Wave Hub is the largest wave and tidal energy project in the UK and Hydro Group is delighted to be involved in this ambitious innovative design and is now bidding on similar systems in Brazil, Canada and Spain.

Hydro Group comprises Hydro Bond Engineering and Hydrocable Systems. Both companies design and manufacture customer bespoke electrical & optical cables, connectors, penetrators and assemblies for use in a variety of industries including renewables, defence, oil & gas, nuclear, geological survey, marine research and diving. www.hydrogroup.plc.uk

McDONALD ENGINEERS are planning to unveil their renewable range of hot water cylinders. The range is one of the most flexible and efficient systems on the market

McDonald Engineers hot water cylinders can take power from any type of energy source such as solar or geothermal and transfer it to piping hot water. A key element in the design of the range is the recognition that, in many instances, one renewable energy source is unable to act as the single source and provide the level of energy required. McDonald Engineers have therefore developed a multi-fuel system, which can work with a number of energy sources and in doing so, reduce the ongoing running costs.

Other exhibits will include: To demonstrate how a hot water cylinder can be used with multiple fuel sources we will have a hot water cylinder on the stand with the side panel cut away to show connections and coils. They are used by/of use to: architects, local government, building and construction engineers, plumbers and heating installers, and hoteliers.

As one of the leading manufacturers of copper cylinders, they will be also be promoting the benefits of copper in renewable energy applications. As it is the most efficient conductor of heat, with a thermal conductivity that is 30 times greater than stainless steel, it can transfer heat quicker. And as copper is a more versatile material, it allows additional heat coils and extra connections which enable multi-fuel solutions. These properties are already recognised by several heat pumps manufacturers who are specifying that their products should be used in conjunction with copper cylinder. www.mcdonald-engineers.com

REWITEC is a German innovative technology company with a vision of taking care of friction and wear in tribological systems.

REWITEC has successfully developed a Nanocoating technology which restores worn surfaces and permanently protects them from new wear and abrasion. REWITEC Nanocoating offers protection to gears and bearings in wind turbines, even under extreme conditions REWITEC Technology is not based on improving the lubricant but on modifying the surface structure of rubbing metal. Mechanical parts acquire a new, smooth metal silicate surface with improved tribologic quality.

The active components of REWITEC technology consist of a mixture of various synthetic silicates. The coating process is performed by simply adding the treatment to the lubricant in the machine, which carries the compound to the friction zones of metal surfaces. Due to high local temperatures and pressures in the friction micro sphere, the components of the coating treatment bond with the metal surfaces. The silicate particles react with the metal forming nano composites of metal silicate on the surfaces. The new particles fill the roughness, pores and mirco cracks in the metal surface and restore them forming an extremely smooth and solid metal silicate layer. The surface which once had metal-to-metal rubbing is modified now to have a contact between two metal silicate surfaces with low friction and improved tribologic properties.

Surface treatment cures gears and bearings after operating in extreme conditions:
